AliveCommerce / How we work / Digital maturity
Most businesses sit somewhere on this ladder, and the most common expensive mistake is attempting work that belongs two rungs higher. Buying a reporting platform when the data isn’t clean. Automating a process nobody has written down. Find your rung, and the right next move is usually obvious.
Pick the one that sounds most like you. Nobody is neatly in one stage — different parts of a business are often two rungs apart.
Each stage depends on the one below it. Reporting is only as good as the data underneath, and data is only as good as the process that captures it. A business at Infancy that buys a business intelligence platform doesn’t get insight — it gets faster access to numbers it can’t trust, and a licence fee.
This is also why we’ll sometimes recommend doing something smaller and less exciting than what you came in asking for. It isn’t caution. It’s that the exciting version won’t work yet.
About the ladder and how it gets used.
No, it’s normal. Finance is frequently two rungs ahead of operations, and the warehouse is often behind both. What matters is that the parts which depend on each other aren’t too far apart — integrated reporting across a department still running on paper won’t produce anything reliable.
Sometimes, in a contained area, with deliberate effort. What doesn’t work is skipping across the whole business at once — that’s the pattern behind most failed transformation programmes. Narrow and complete beats broad and partial.
Usefully from Established onward, and in contained experiments before that. AI applied to undocumented processes and unreliable data produces confident, wrong output faster than before. The readiness question is almost always about data and process rather than the technology.
Not necessarily. Plenty of businesses operate profitably and happily at Early stage or Adolescence, and the investment to move further wouldn’t return. The ladder is a diagnostic, not a scoreboard.
Whether you’re modernizing a critical system, reducing manual work, improving the tools you already rely on, or simply trying to understand what should come next, AliveCommerce brings the strategy, technology, and hands-on support to turn uncertainty into measurable progress — without bias, borders, or BS.
